Dealing With Massive Data Sets

Six Sigma Forum Magazine vol. 8 issue 1 - November 2008

Abstract:Data mining, the extraction of information from historical data sets, can be used to uncover a wealth of hidden knowledge that often pertains directly to the tasks in Six Sigma projects. Data mining offers opportunities for improved product and service quality, cycle time reduction, and cost of quality savings. Black Belts will realize that many variables relevant to their projects have already been measured and stored, making the need to collect new data unnecessary. A cell phone network optimization case study is used to illustrate general data mining methods.
