Using the Power of Statistical Thinking
Leitnaker, Mary
Industry has increased its reliance on statistical thinking for process management and improvement. Consequently, statisticians have had a growing role in the management of industrial operations. To perform this role effectively, statisticians have redefined their jobs in industrial organizations.Knowledge of statistics alone is insufficient to provide the type of guidance needed for process ipmrovement. Critical components of improvement work are the management and technical knowledge needed to determine where and how to employ statistical techniques. The statistician is not merely an expert on statistical methods. Instead, statisticians must provide leadership in directing the integration of statistical methods with management and process knowledge to achieve organizational improvement. This publication contains observations on the role of statistics and statisticians in providing guidance to industrial organizations in the use of statistical thinking.
