Concepts for R&R Studies, Second Edition
Larry B. Barrentine

A fully revised edition of the best-selling classic!

Methods used to evaluate R&R studies have changed since the first edition was first published. This second edition provides instruction that reflects current manufacturing practices. The relationship of the two basic measurement capability indices and process capability has been clarified in this new edition. This development supports the concept that measurement evaluation should be performed in conjunction with process capability assessments in order to fully judge the status and priority of measurement systems. Since the last edition, using software to analyze statistics has become a more common practice. Barrentine demonstrates examples of the proper methods for applying statistical software to R&R studies.

Reading this book will give you an understanding of how measurement relates to reported processes, knowledge about how to assess your organizations measurement system, and directions to establish priorities and develop action plans that will effectively address measurement problems. This book assumes that process engineers, quality professionals, technical managers, and process managers in manufacturing industries are already familiar with basic SPC. Barrentine updated this guide to reflect current assessment practices, the use of software, the interrelationship of measurement indices, and process capability related to R&R studies.

"I'm truly a fan of Larry's writing: I find it clear and to the point. As a practitioner, I'm not too concerned with theory-just want to know how to use R&R to help my organization progress. This is truly a "hands-on" manual. Mr. Barrentine writes in such a clear, straight-forward manner that anyone who is concerned with measurement issues will find this manual useful. "Concepts for R&R Studies" provides a concise explanation of several different approaches to evaluating R&R, comparing the pro's and con's of each. It's the only R&R reference on my bookshelf that I refer to regularly. The text and examples help a beginning practitioner conduct an R&R with ease. The appendices fill in details for special situations and provide additional insight for the more experienced user. I make sure every QA and Process Engineering Department is using this manual."
