Abstract: As companies seek ways to learn more about their processes, customers, and competitors, there is heightened interest in the use of statistics. The successful use of statistical methods requires knowledge of underlying tools and an appreciation of concepts not always stressed sufficiently in Six Sigma instruction and other training programs. An overview of the role of statistics in business and industry is given to help Six Sigma practitioners improve their effectiveness and to show trainers how to design their presentations. A sidebar article explains what makes reliability analysis different.
