Abstract: Prominent authorities in financial academics and quality management comment on the article, Quality Snags in the Mortgage-Finance Supply Chain by Paul Zipkin. John R. Latham of the Monford College of Business, University of Northern Colorado, writes on system design issues needed to create change in the mortgage-finance system. Ken Stephens, an academician in the International Academy for Quality, discusses quality principles, philosophies and methodologies applicable to the mortgage-finance supply chain. Oklahoma State University’s Gregory H. Watson calls for reliability in the financial system that incorporates the principles of managing for quality into the routine business practices of the industry. Peter Kolsar of the Deming Center for Quality Management at Columbia University points out that each of Zipkin’s suggestions raises more questions than answers, and that applying quality principles to the mortgage problem will not be easy. In his response to the commentators, Zipkin thanks them for their contributions and adds a few observations of his own.
