Abstract: The author states that recessions are as important to personal well-being as good times because they drive mandatory changes that move us toward greater awareness and improvement in the way we live. In a series of dialog-base workshops to discover what really matters to people, 10 themes were identified that participants felt were most important for dealing with the recession. Significantly, these findings indicate that human aspects are considered more important during challenging times than status and money. Social advancements instigated by the current recession include enhanced awareness, greater collaboration, increased communication, responsible living, and greater sensitivity.
