Abstract: When an organization begins thinking of leaning its processes, it is important to understand its lifecycle stage. Regardless of the maturity of the organization, the lifecycle stage affects the ability of the organization to integrate changes. The quality change agent who is aware of the status of the organization will be more successful with process improvement attempts. In all stages (from the startup to the mature organization), reducing operating costs is a common goal. The development of an end-to-end business process and the initiation of a process improvement effort to reduce costs overall must include analysis of the document control (front end) and the records management (back end) functions that support the manufacturing process. This is called the “architectural approach” to optimizing quality-related processes. The document and record management functions may not be collocated with the plant, so the change agent and the process improvement team need to be aware of the impact of these functions on the total cost of quality. Quality process workflows need to reflect the entire workflow and provide escalation procedures that designate the role and responsibility for the entire workflow.
