Abstract: The U.S. Navy considers the design and build costs of a new vessel small when compared to the overall life-cycle operations and maintenance cost of the ship. In addition, the ship will spend many nonvalue added days in dry dock. Improved efficiency in defense remanufacturing is vital to cost control and greater operational capability for the military. In 2005 the naval shipyards began adapting the tools and techniques of lean Six Sigma to create greater operational efficiency in defense remanufacturing. Four cases of LSS application to unique remanufacturing settings illustrate the underlying concepts.
