A major challenge encountered during software process improvement (SPI) is that process descriptions generally don’t correspond to the process executed during the software development project. This deficiency is caused by processes that are unrelated to project activities and the failure to detect project changes made to improve the process. A comparative study is presented that looks at some of the most popular SPI approaches, and a new SPI methodology, Process and Project Alignment Methodology (ProPAM), is proposed. Problems encountered in existing SPI approaches are discussed, and further research in process and project alignment is encouraged.
