Abstract: Finding ways to improve the production of the C-17 cargo plane became the mission of one team at Boeing’s Long Beach, CA facility. The team used a variety of quality tools and data-measuring devices to help develop a machine that automated the fuselage fastener function. New ways were discovered to save time and money, make the process more efficient, and prevent injuries to mechanics. In recognition for its efforts, the team won a Gold Award at the International Team Excellence competition.
