Abstract: Due to the pressures of advancing technology and the speed of globalization, many U.S. companies are missing steps that could in turn weaken their supply base and affect overall productivity. The global supply base can be improved by using tools to ensure effective and efficient communication. These initiatives should occur in each of the four phases of a customer/supplier relationship: prelaunch, prototype, production, and ongoing performance. In addition to using the right data and integrating feedback processes critical for sustainable improvements, it is important to develop human relationships with suppliers. Positive relationships are an important way to gain mutual trust and avoid misunderstandings.
