Abstract: Efforts for studying the future rely on an application of probability theory that forms the basis of future scenario writing. ASQ’s 2008 futures study looked into the forces that are driving change and identified seven believed to be the most significant for shaping the future of quality. These are: globalization, social responsibility, new dimensions for quality, an aging population, healthcare, environmental concerns, and 21st century technology. Four scenarios - a utopian world, a doomsday scenario, a perfect scenario, and a business-as-usual scenario – provide a backdrop to express a range of potential futures. The extended online version of the article describes two other potential futures and the use of the S-curve in modeling natural growth models.
