Abstract: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.]
Little research has been done in hospitals on the interactions between individual managerial variables and the level of quality performance. Using data from hospitals in New York State, it is shown how quality performance, measured as the risk-adjusted mortality rate, is affected by capital investment, staffing level, and compensation level. The combination of capital investment and compensation level showed significant interaction with respect to quality performance, indicating that managers should consider these issues simultaneously in their decision-making process.
