Abstract: Data stratification, the collection of data into groups, can be helpful when developing Six Sigma projects because it enables Champions to generate a measurable, attainable, realistic, time-based (SMART) set of expectations defining the problem to be solved. An example describes the problem a large network components manufacturing firm was experiencing with an increased failure rate of customer power supplies. An investigation was conducted to determine where the problem was taking place. By examining the problem using data stratification, a Champion was able to develop a project charter that provided clear direction and expectations to the Black Belt. If data stratification is followed, results will include a higher success rate for projects, deployments, and Six Sigma.
