Abstract: [This abstract is based on the author’s abstract.]
In 1954, Joseph M. Juran gave a series of lectures to Japanese industry executives and middle managers. These lectures, and those given by W. Edwards Deming in 1950, are considered seminal contributions to the Japanese quality control movement. This article examines Juran’s own annotated lecture notes in order to assess their impact at the time, as well as their relevance today. The notes contain a surprisingly comprehensive and modern view of quality management, supporting the claim by Japanese industry leaders that Juran’s lectures had a strong and lasting impact in Japan.
