Abstract: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.]
Time to market is a key factor in the success of a software project, so companies often reduce cycle time by overlapping the functional and system test phases. This can result in defect backlogs that can affect software quality, as well as the project schedule. A defect backlog analysis of three prior releases of an IBM product and an approach to estimating defect backlog for a future release is presented. The estimated defect backlog curve can be compared to the actual backlog in an ongoing release to track the project schedule, permitting steps to be taken to prevent future project delay. Additionally, an analysis is conducted to determine the impact of defect backlog on field quality of software. Suggestions are given for minimizing backlog.
