Abstract: Regardless of personal political views, all leaders can benefit from following the events of the 2008 presidential campaign. Just as in politics, competition can be healthy when focused on organizational objectives rather than the objectives of a single group or department. By defining the competition correctly, leaders can set the tone and direction in their organization. Although political parties seem to take a casual attitude in promoting future leaders, business leaders must accept the role of preparing others for important leadership roles in the organization. Communicating the organization’s plan and connecting it with individual goals help make individuals more accountable for their own development. Today’s political candidates are taking advantage of new technology and avenues of communication in order to connect with a new generation of voters. An innovative environment encourages creativity but also will cause mistakes. Leaders who are willing to admit mistakes build credibility and trust with others. Like the best politicians, a leader needs to build an outside network that will be critical to personal and leadership success.
