Abstract: Railroad operator CSX Corp., faced with skyrocketing fuel prices and wanting to do its part to be greener, formed a locomotive shutdown team to find ways to reduce the 30 million gallons of diesel wasted by idling locomotives. The team used quality tools, including Six Sigma DMAIC and failure mode effects analysis (FMEA), to select the project and to understand the impact the project would have on various stakeholders. Identification and analysis of root causes enabled the team to find fuel conserving solutions. One of the more tangible results of the three-year project was a savings of more than 14 million gallons of fuel and more than $28 million. A sidebar article provides an insider’s view of the project.
