Abstract: In this first article of a two-part series, the authors discuss the first two of five interlocking principles or laws that unlock optimum productivity and job satisfaction for individuals and organizations. The first principle, the law of value, states that true worth is determined by how much more is given in value than is taken in payment. While this may seem counterintuitive at first, examples illustrate how consistent overdelivery of value is the basis for creating a culture of excellence. The second principle, the law of compensation, asserts that income is determined by how many people are served and how well they are served. In addition to adding value, it is necessary to bring this added value to as many people as possible. A sidebar article reviews the authors’ book, The Go-Giver: A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea.
