Abstract: The author presents a tongue-in-cheek comparison between losing weight and leading a business. His six-step program leading to success is accompanied by warnings similar to those attached to most diet regimens. Avoid eating alone at your desk, Moore advises, and spend the lunch hour fraternizing with co-workers. Drink plenty of water, because this provides the opportunity to visit two epicenters of employee contact – the water cooler and the bathroom. Engage in regular activity by walking around the workplace and making off-site visits to key customers. Beware of tempting treats such as “cutting edge” business initiatives. Shun negative people and instead create a support group of like-minded people that provide a source of positive energy. Finally, Moore advises business leaders to carefully monitor their intake of business best practices, since what worked for one organization will most likely not work for someone else.
