Abstract: In order to avoid the consequences of poor control of blood sugar in its acute healthcare facilities, Sharp HealthCare in San Diego called upon staff members who were ASQ-trained Six Sigma Black Belts to initiate an improvement project. Implementing a blood sugar control program meant educating everyone involved – doctors, nurses, and support staff. A define-measure-analyze-improve-control (DMAIC) project kept the BBs focused on critical issues. Improvements in six categories of the Baldrige criteria were also critical to the improvement project. The project was one of several improvement results that gained Sharp the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2007.
