Abstract: Seeking better ways to improve service to their patients and streamline operations, two Iowa healthcare organizations chose the ISO 9001:2000 standard. Although very different in size and objectives, both organizations determined that a quality management system established under ISO 9001 would enable them to meet all statutory and regulatory requirements. The similar successes and challenges each group met on their respective journeys are revealed. Both organizations believe ISO 9001 is a management system applicable to any healthcare setting, whether private or government, and provides the tools that enable better care at lower cost.
