Abstract: Over the past few decades, organizations have adopted new management philosophies, such as total quality management (TQM) and the theory of constraints (CM), over traditional management (TM) thinking. A survey of quality professionals throughout the country was used to determine if TM, TQM, and CM are perceived as being distinct from one another and whether or not practitioners and educators have different perceptions. Respondents were most familiar with TQM, even though TM is the dominant philosophy in their organizations. The researchers noted that given its newness and growing awareness, CM is not yet ready for a paradigm shift, but it is gaining ground in production and inventory management.
