Abstract: Sustainability is an enterprise’s ability to survive and prosper in a rapidly evolving environment, and the essence of sustainability is performance results. Any expenditure of resources that does not generate value produces a net loss and impaired sustainability. The ISO 9004 revision draft currently in circulation for comment envisions the use of mechanisms that identify present and future expectations and needs of defined stakeholders. The approach also provides structured self-assessment of and actions to improve enterprise sustainability. The draft points to a paradigm shift in the nature and purpose of quality management systems, and a resultant shift in QMS architecture and organizational ownership. A sidebar article relates a parable illustrating one organization’s typical and counterproductive response to failure.
