Abstract: Cost control and product quality are only capable of sustaining competitive advantage. It takes product or service innovation to create competitive advantage in a global marketplace. Innovation consists of a series of steps like any other business or industrial process, so that specific quality tools can be similarly used for its improvement. The quality community is well acquainted with the seven quality tools long used to map existing processes to learn about performance capability. Now, a set of seven new tools is available that is much more useful in conceptualization and ideation. ASQ has recognized the value of these new tools by including them in the higher level bodies of knowledge for several certifications. The innovation process is an area where the seven new quality tools can be applied to get higher quality products and services to market faster and at lower cost.
