Abstract: The Boeing C-17 is a military transport plane based in Long Beach, California. Each week, more than 2,200 assembly kits are moved from the warehouse to the assembly line, and any reduction in kit accuracy could delay the construction of aircraft. The project team's vision was to provide traceability of all parts throughout the supply chain and enhance the process by leveraging technology. The steps taken to achieve this mission are described. The C-17 program manages its business by using process based management techniques and a continuous improvement tool. The seven-step process starts by defining the process and establishing metrics, and finishes by implementing improvements. For continuous improvement, the process is repeated. Performance metrics linked project results with organizational goals.
