Abstract: New thinking about the intentions and uses of teams is discussed, with emphasis on strong leadership as an approach for increasing the effectiveness of teams. Also considered is building the infrastructure needed to support a culture of effective teams. W. Edwards Deming noted that organizational transformation begins with the individual, therefore it is the responsibility of leaders to encourage the learning and development of each individual for the greater good of the organization. Businesses today are in the midst of a paradigm shift that embraces the basic tenets of systems thinking, including new leadership skills necessary to encourage a culture that fosters effective teamwork. Progressive and healthy leaders foster creativity in their constituents. Employees who trust their leader are more likely to go along with that leader's vision.
