Abstract: An ISO 9001 audit can be likened to the process of getting a driver's license when you think of the auditor as a department of motor vehicles tester who must examine your vehicle and its key operators before granting certification. ISO 9001 requires that a management representative (MR) be appointed who has the responsibility and authority to ensure that processes needed for the quality management system are established. The MR's levels of confidence and competence depend upon the level of training, necessary tools, and other support received from the organization. Choosing a novice lacking any real authority to establish, implement, maintain, and report on progress as required by the standard is a recipe for failure. A lack of investment in and support of the MR demonstrates a weakness in the organization's leadership. A sidebar article offers excerpts from ISO 9001 regarding appointment of a management representative.
