Abstract: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.]Many software metrics have been proposed that are related to various object-oriented constructs, but it is often difficult to determine which of the many metrics described in the literature to use. Relationships among the existing coupling metrics and their relation to fault proneness are explored. Data collected from 12 Java applications containing 136 classes and 26 coupling metrics were used in the study. Only six dimensions were captured using the principal component method, indicating that many metrics capture the same dimensions in the metric set, and as such, are based on comparable theories and provide redundant information. The predicted model shows that coupling metrics are strongly related to fault proneness and predicts faulty classes with more than 80 percent accuracy.
