Abstract: The ability to embrace change comes only to people who develop an awareness that includes the ability to understand how tools and ideas can be used to solve the problem at hand. This skill can be learned through experience and practice, but few organizations know how to provide their employees with the opportunity to do so. The author, the former CEO of a major corporation, relates his own experiences encouraging innovation within his organization through the use of his "Four P's" policies and practices. He stresses the importance an organization's senior executives and board members play in establishing this culture of innovation and change through the policies they adopt. A sidebar article reviews Robert Price's book, The Eye for Innovation, in which he outlines the principles that generate and support innovation.
