Abstract: The principles of lean manufacturing are as applicable to healthcare as they are to the automobile industry. However, unlike manufacturing, healthcare management structures are not usually hierarchical, and hospitals generally are not-for-profit. Value adding for patients is different than for customers in manufacturing because the goal of healthcare is prevention and cure. The 18 building blocks of lean healthcare can eliminate waste and prevent the propagation of errors. Two 5S projects show how staff members were benefited and lean efforts were encouraged throughout the organization when results were achieved quickly.
