Abstract: A supplement to enhance ISO 19011:2002, Guidelines on Quality and/or Environmental Management Systems Auditing, has been developed by U.S. experts. The supplement provides guidance for internal and supplier programs and the use of the standard by small and midsized organizations. ISO 19011 is a guideline standard and is not mandatory unless invoked as part of a multi-party agreement. Its implementation is generally not auditable because elements of the standard are not requirements. However, when the standard is invoked as a requirement, its guidance becomes specifications for conformity assessment. New applications for management systems are continuing to emerge, bringing the challenge of being able to effectively audit them.
