Abstract: [Abstract only.]Automotive suppliers currently do not routinely designate the appropriate number of quality characteristics as "critical" on FMEAs, control plans, or operator instructions. Production part approval is based on initial capability studies of only special characteristics, and some critical characteristics can only be identified and designated by suppliers. This is why quality management systems fail to live up to executive expectations. The "missing links" are discussed with the goal of improving the effectiveness of the quality management system. Some concrete actionable recommendations are given for achieving better quality through a more effective capable management system.
