Abstract: [Abstract only.]Data are the critical facts and figures associated with every aspect of life in the information age. They are used to conduct every operation, no matter how mundane, and the quantity acquired and stored by companies and government is growing rapidly. Much data is of poor quality and is the basis of issues of national and international importance. While the cost of poor data quality is difficult to determine, the cumulative impact is enormous. It may seem that the tools of quality management don't apply to data since data have no physical properties, but once it is understood how data are defined and how data values are created, these issues can be resolved. The fundamental techniques of process and supplier management, control, improvement and quality planning will then work quite well.
