Abstract: [This abstract is based on the author's abstract.]The role of Total Quality Management (TQM) is considered as a means of enabling and supporting organizations in a modern business environment based on digital competitiveness. The investigative approach is concerned with how TQM maturity and sustainability can be established. Sustainability can be equated with the principle of excellence, but the problem discussed here is to find a common, acceptable definition of excellence and sustainability. An analysis reviews internationally based organizations that have been pioneering TQM and who have embedded the TQM culture in day-to-day management and as a key enabler for developing their strategic plans. Results indicate that TQM sustainability is largely dependent on transformational change, having critical factors in place to enable superior performance, a culture of continuous improvement and learning, and using a balanced perspective.>
