Abstract: [This abstract is based on the author's abstract.]In many western countries, quality seems to have lost momentum due to lower than expected results from various TQM models. It is suggested that the shortcomings of present quality management models is due to the lack of a systems perspective. Injecting systems thinking into quality thinking is particularly urgent, since all organizations need quality. A review of basic quality concepts begins with a search for the convergence points between quality thinking and systems thinking. Relationships among members of the organization and the value exchange processes that take place in such relationships emerge as the basic convergence points. An analysis is made of quality and value in economic relationships, and the possible extrapolation of resulting concepts to non-economic relationships is considered. Additionally, a practical method of integrating the systems view into TQM models is proposed.
