Abstract: Little's Law was originally designed to address customer service system performance. It defines the critical relationships that dictate how long it will take to complete a work task within a process and is the key to understanding process efficiency. However, it may be applied to production processes or any system dependent on input volume. While they may not realize it, organizations pursuing improvement strategies based on lean methods are already taking advantage of Little's Law because these approaches are designed to produce low levels of work in process (WIP) and thus improve cycle time. A sidebar article shows how to determine cycle time using Little's Law.
