Abstract: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] A case study investigates quality managers' experiences with ISO 9000:1994 and total quality management (TQM) implementation. While results show that the standard can help some companies reorganize procedures and define responsibilities, managers' opinions on its possible effect on company performance were not positive. TQM, however, has improved many aspects of performance. Contrary to recommendations in the literature, managers believe that it is disruptive to jointly implement ISO 9000 and TQM. Because in practice there are two parallel quality systems within a company, it is better to adapt ISO requirements to facilitate TQM implementation.
