Abstract: [This abstract is based on the author's abstract.]The experiences of 227 US organizations as they transitioned from ISO 9000:1994 to ISO 9001:2000 are reflected in a survey by the US Technical Advisory Group to ISO/TC 176. Differences emerged between manufacturers and non-manufacturers and between smaller and larger companies. Compared with manufacturers, non-manufacturers relied more heavily on customer training, found objectives to be not measurable, and had difficulty with data collection and analysis, but were able to document cost savings from implementing the standards. Manufacturers relied previously on Gap Analysis by Organization but found that more effective management reviews aided in compliance. Compared with smaller companies, larger companies also used Gap Analysis by Organization for assessing quality management systems, offered transition training, required more time for audits, acknowledged extensive correction action needed for Continual Improvement Process and for Competency Requirements, and were more likely to have demonstrated with some ISO standards in the past.
