Abstract: [This article may be available for free to Teamwork & Participation Forum members on the "Members-Only" portion of ASQ's website.]

John Yokoyama attributes the success of his Pike Place Fish Market to a working environment that is fun for employees while maximizing customer satisfaction. The unconventional philosophy of business developed when the company, facing bankruptcy, was forced to change. Following the suggestion of strategic business coach Jim Bergquist, the company created a vision that their fish market would be world famous. A fundamental change was in Yokoyama's role, moving from "tyrant boss" to team partner. Workers' roles evolved from fish salespeople to entertaining performers who happen to sell fish. The change required total commitment and trust, but has led to ballooning sales, employee bonuses tied to sales, and success based on genuine teamwork.
