Abstract: In the spring of 2002 a survey ASQ Fellow Members was conducted asking opinions and comments on the changing role of the quality professional. A brief compilation of survey results is presented, along with some predictions of expected directions organizations may take in the future and recommendations to help quality professionals prepare for change. The survey included five open-ended questions, the answers to which were broad and diverse. It is generally agreed that the quality professional of the future will be an educator, facilitator, and a source of the body of knowledge pertaining to the various disciplines of the profession. The common thread among the changes is that knowledge will be a differentiator. To prepare for inevitable changes, the quality professional must embrace change, remain flexible, be willing to take risks, and develop a reliable network of professional contacts.
