Abstract: Following the example set by the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1987, the Swedish Institute for Quality established the Swedish Quality Award (SQA) in 1992. Many small enterprises found the criteria of SQA too complicated, so in 1996 a regional quality award was established in two counties in northern Sweden to encourage cooperation between the two counties. This paper describes the background, the evaluation process, the evaluation model, and some results and effects obtained within the Quality Award in Northern Sweden.
