Abstract: Leadership, teamwork, and training are characteristics of the 1993 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winners. Ames Rubber Corporation and Eastman Chemical Company received their awards during a ceremony attended by President Bill Clinton and Commerce Secretary Ronald Brown. The President and Secretary personally congratulated many of the workers in the audience. At Ames Rubber, leadership is visible in management's commitment to improvement and customer satisfaction. Teamwork exists because each employee participates in an involvement group and a quality team. Education is provided by at least 24 hours of quality training for each employee. Success at Ames Rubber has been influenced by the good example of one of their customers, Xerox Corporation. At Eastman, leadership comes from managers who support a culture of encouragement and reinforcement. Teamwork resides in an interlocking team structure that involves all employees, including upper management. This team structure is the means by which information flows through the organization. Training is ongoing in areas such as statistics and problem solving.
