Abstract: Gauging concerns are often overlooked in the utilization of Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques. This article will address general topics in the realm of gauging utilization for Statistical Process Control. The first section will be a background discussion of the application of gauge studies to determine the suitability of gauging to the appropriate control parameter. The second section consists of two case studies that illustrate inherent problems in gauge selection and usage for SPC. The general topics covered are (1) the methodology and appropriate use of gauge repeatability and reproducibility studies and (2) the methodology and appropriate use of measurement error ratio studies. The two case studies each address a specific problem encountered when new gauges were introduced into injection-molding operations at Technimark, Inc. The first study illustrates the results of inadequate operator training, whereas the second study addresses a gauge design that was inappropriate for the measurement task at hand.
