FAA Case Study: Implementing ISO 9001:2000 in a Governmental
Organization
In November 2001, the FAAs AFS 40 group began a journey
to ISO 9001:2000 registration. Paul Kunder, who provided hands-on
assistance to AFS 40, writes that this decision is unusual
because not only is it an organizational unit of the US Government
and an internal auditing operation, but it is believed to
be the first aviation flight safety regulatory agency worldwide
to become registered to any ISO 9000 standard. Kunder provides
his insights on AFS 40s QMS implementation and registration
effort, examining its methodology and benefits.
