International Healthcare Workshop: An ISO Agreement

Ron Berglund and Mickey Christensen write that an interactive ISO-sanctioned workshop took place in Detroit in January 2001 involving 135 healthcare professionals representing 17 countries and that the workshop concluded with consensus support to proceed with the finalization of the first ISO ITA. ITA 1, which will provides sector-specific guidelines on the application of ISO 9004:2000 to health service providers, is circulating among the workshop participants for comment and balloting that will close April 2, 2001, with expected publication by ISO in May. Berglund and Christensen share their firsthand perspective on what has been developed and why, including details of the workshop and factors that helped shape ITA 1.
