A First in Healthcare: A Shared ISO 9001:2000 Registration

Mickey Christensen writes that a QMS registration in rural Kentucky in mid-November 2001 may represent two firsts: possibly the first registration of a hospital to ISO 9001:2000; and the first registration of a hospital and three affiliated but separate clinics under a single certificate of registration, with a fourth clinic sharing the same QMS but with a separate certificate. Christensen provides a look at Livingston Hospital and Healthcare Services and Tri-Rivers Healthcare, the implementation and registration process at the hospital and four clinics, the reasons they pursued registration and the benefits of a "healthy" QMS for healthcare organizations and their customers.
