Marketplace: What Does Decrease in Registration Rates Signal?
Stewart Anderson writes that, while the number of new certificates
of registration to ISO 9001/2/3:1994, ISO 14001:1996 and the
supplements to ISO 9001 remained healthy, it appears that
the Year 2000 saw a marked deceleration in registrations in
North America. According to the data received by the World
Preferred Registry, 6,800 new ISO 9001/2/3:1994 certificates
were issued in North America in 2000 compared with 9,745 in
1999a decrease of 30.2%. Further evidence of a registration
slowdown in 2000 is provided by the numbers of new certificates
issued for ISO 14001, QS-9000 and AS9000. Anderson compares
Year 2000 and 1999 registration data for ISO 9001/2/3, ISO
14000, QS-9000 and AS9000 and provides 2000 data for TL 9000.
He also explores some of the more likely reasons for the slowdown,
and offers projections for registration trends in 2001.
