600-Acre Ford Rouge Center to Become Greener
The 600-acre Ford Rouge Center will undergo
a major redevelopment that will lay the groundwork for sustainable
manufacturing at one of the worlds largest and oldest
industrial operations. Having already registered the EMSs
of all its manufacturing facilities worldwide to ISO 14001:1996
by 1998, including its manufacturing operations at the Rouge
Center, Ford is laying out business objectives that tie in
with its corporate environmental objectives. Redevelopment
of the 1917 complex will form the foundation for the companys
vision of balancing lean manufacturing with environmental
sensitivity. This plant eventually will replace the Dearborn
Assembly Plant and utilize flexible equipment and processes
that will have the capability to manufacture three vehicle
platforms and up to nine different models. Details of the
environmental initiatives and background information on the
Center and the redevelopment effort are provided.
