Milwaukee, Wis., November 5, 2009 — Three K-12 schools are the recipients of this year’s Gold, Silver and Bronze Team Excellence for Education awards. The award, which showcases the nation’s most outstanding improvement efforts, was presented at the 17th Annual National Quality Education Conference (NQEC) in Jacksonville, Fla., October 25–27, 2009. The award is sponsored by ASQ (American Society for Quality), the leading quality improvement association in the United States. The recipients are:
Dale City Elementary, a Title 1 school with a high mobility rate, was in danger of not meeting Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) requirements in math. The Dale City Math Club team received the Gold Award for its use of continuous improvement tools to engage struggling math students. The program resulted in decreased math anxiety, increased enthusiasm for learning and fulfillment of the AYP requirement for math.
Victor Elementary School District’s Close the Gap team was honored with a Silver Award for its innovative approach to closing the achievement gap between schools. Using quality tools to discover root cause and examine district achievement data, a solution was found resulting in significant student achievement gains.
Rockwall ISD is one of only two Texas public school districts to pay 100 percent of the health insurance costs for teachers, support staff and dependents. The district’s Human Resources Leadership team was honored with the Bronze Award based on its design and development of a modern, state-of-the-art health center that rivals elite private medical centers.
The Education Team Excellence Award provides educators with the opportunity to benchmark their team’s efforts against other schools’ best practices, and capture national and international recognition for the winning schools’ team-based quality improvement efforts.
"In addition to providing educators with a prime chance to spotlight their unique challenges and solutions, this award also offers a means to generate additional learning from a variety of outside quality champions," said ASQ President Peter Andres.
NQEC is the nation’s leading conference for teachers, administrators and support personnel to learn about the use of quality tools and concepts that can be applied to improve U.S. schools. It is an outstanding opportunity for educators seeking awareness, commitment, refinement and measurable progress in applying continuous improvement approaches and processes. In addition to numerous special sessions for K-12, it’s also a venue for educators and administrators to interact with their peers from school districts across the country and around the world.
